OD Practitioner National Programme

The Organisational Development (OD) Practitioner National Development Programme is a practical learning journey designed to help you grow your confidence, develop your skills, and strengthen your impact.

Whether you’re just getting started or stepping up, this programme will support you to take the next step in your OD career and make a lasting difference.

It has been created in response to feedback from more than 600 NHS OD and HR professionals, who told us what they need to feel more confident, capable, and supported in their roles.

Please note we have temporarily paused this programme - you can read the full update below. However, in the meantime, please register your interest and we will let you know when you can enroll.

Important note

We have temporarily paused intake on this programme, while we make some essential updates, and we're very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. NHS Elect is working closely with the Chartered Management Institute to support the requirement for NHS leaders to be formally certified. We’re expecting clarification about the pathway to certification and the role that CMI accredited courses will play in that accreditation imminently. For that reason we’re pausing enrolment on the OD Practitioners’ Programme until we’re clear on how to map it to the new framework and how any accreditation would relate to the move towards certification.

We regret having to do this but we think it’s important to be able to tell colleagues how any accreditation relates to certified NHS management status. We expect full details to be published within weeks after which we’ll remap the programme against the new framework. The material’s written and mapping is already underway against CMI’s general leadership framework so we expect to make rapid progress after formal publication of their NHS Framework. On the basis of those uncertainties we’re pausing enrolment and will be releasing new dates for delivering the programme once the new framework, syllabus and pathway to certification have been formally published.

Please do register your interest if you'd like us to get in touch when the programme is up and running again.

About the programme

This programme is a blended learning experience comprising five full days of face-to-face learning in central London, two online drop-in clinics, and access to a personal mentor.

Delivered by experienced NHS OD practitioners, this programme blends theory with practical application.

The content has been directly shaped by survey feedback from more than 600 NHS staff, meaning the topics, structure and style reflect the real challenges and development needs of those working in OD today.

  • Ready to take the next step in their career or into a more senior OD role
  • Keen to connect with others at a similar stage and build a professional network

  • 1 x online mentoring session, delivered in a 30-minute one-to-one slot
  • Peer support and professional networking throughout

1. Mapping the field

We’ll explore what OD really means, where it came from, and why it matters today. You’ll get to grips with key OD competencies and reflect on your personal role using the idea of ‘self as instrument’.

2. Values, Culture and Constructive Conflict

This session focuses on personal and organisational values, and how these influence culture. You’ll learn how to navigate disagreement and support the development of constructive conflict in teams. It will include an introduction to Edgar Schein’s influential work on understanding culture to effect change.

3. Online Drop-In Clinic

A relaxed online check-in to reflect on what you’ve learned so far, ask questions, share progress, and hear from your peers and facilitators.

4. Managing Change

Change is everywhere, but how do we make it stick? This day covers the history and psychology of change, balancing head and heart, and applying practical change models in real-world NHS settings.

5. Getting the Best Out of Others

Learn how to adapt your leadership and communication style to get the best from different people. You’ll explore working styles, agile leadership, active listening, coaching (GROW model), and the building blocks of great facilitation.

6. Online Drop-In Clinic

A second opportunity to reconnect, reflect on your learning journey, and troubleshoot any challenges with support from the group and OD faculty.

7. Communication, Storytelling & Presentation Skills

Great OD practitioners communicate with clarity and influence. This interactive session helps you build presence, confidence, and storytelling skills to bring your messages to life and inspire change.

8. Mentorship Session

A one-to-one conversation with an experienced OD mentor to reflect on your development, explore future career steps, and receive personalised guidance tailored to your needs.
